Fukui prefecture is main prefecture is manufacturing commercial nuclear energy in Japan and there have 14 nuclear reactors. Japan first prototype MOX fuel fast-breeder, Monju nuclear reactor and most of nuclear power plants run by Kansai Electric Power Company and who manufacturing nuclear energy for Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe prefectures.
Japan is the third largest nuclear energy user in the world and Japan has 54 nuclear reactors. Fukushima Daichi nuclear plant accident following massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami Japan never declared nuclear emergency since 1970. This is first time a big accident occurred and nuclear emergency declared by government and about 140,000 thousand residence who live within 20 kilometers around the nuclear plant evacuated. Residents living between 20 and 30 km from the wrecked Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant are being urged to "voluntarily evacuate" amid difficulties in obtaining daily necessities and the possibility of further radiation leaks, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said on Friday March 25,2011.

However Japan's nuclear industry has reported ten small accidents since 1995. In December 1995, Sodium coolant leaked at first prototype fast-breeder Monju nuclear reactor in Tsuruga, Fukui prefecture, causing of accident shut down and reactive 14 years after on May 6, 2010.

This is a really neat post. Great pictures.

I've heard from people who came from the Fukui region before, and they always seem to mention the nuclear plant stuff. It's been called something like the "nuclear valley".
